Terry D. Amato Endowment for Tuition Assistance.
It was Barbara and Terry Amato’s intent that their gift would encourage parishioners, alumni, and friends of the school to invest, by their example, in the future of all families by providing financial assistance for a Catholic school education. The Terry D. Amato Endowment for Tuition Assistance provides tuition assistance for Our Lady of the Lake students. It was founded in September of 2013. The funds are invested in CEEF and have the same rate of distribution. It is currently valued at $37,500. Your gift will be acknowledged to the Amato family.
Terry D. Amato Tuition Assistance Endowment
Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School is pleased to Announce the Terry D. Amato Tuition Assistance Endowment
"The fund will provide financial relief for Our Lady of the Lake families who qualify for tuition assistance at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School." ~ Terry and Barbara Amato
Terry describes himself as a Catholic, a Christian, and a husband whose purpose on earth is to know, love, and serve God. He
believes in one God, who is the God of Abraham, God of our Savior and Godhead of the Holy Trinity.
Terry was born in Portland, Oregon and grew up in the Laurelhurst neighborhood with his parents, Sam and Lena Amato, and his five siblings. His parents, married 63 years, offered a loving home filled with music and laughter.
Terry attended St. Phillip Neri grade school before he transferred to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School, where he graduated in
1967. He attended Jesuit and then graduated from Portland State University in 1976.
Some of Terry's best memories come from his time in school, his interest in music, and the lifelong friends he gained along the way. His first major travel was upon graduation from university where his cousins and friends traveled across Europe for over 14 weeks before returning to the promise of a fulltime career in music.
Terry married Carolyn Ruscitti in 1978 and they established their first home in Lake Oswego on one of the appropriately Italian named streets, Botticelli. As founding members of Amici d' Italia, Terry and Carolyn enjoyed marriage until her untimely passing in 1984 after a valiant effort to overcome breast cancer.
Terry threw himself into community involvement efforts and served twice as President of the Italian Businessman's Club, was recognized by Willamette Weekly as one of Portland's Top Ten Men Who Give Back, and served on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society, Oregon Chapter.
Terry's love of music followed him throughout as he formed several successful bands, the longest running, Ovation, at over 40 years, which includes his high school friend, Doug Foran, his brother, Gerry Amato, and friend, Eric Guthman.
Whatever Terry has been involved in, he developed lasting friendships because of his friendly, engaging manner and easy banter that he so enjoyed. His life revolved around the many people in Portland and the events of our community such as Bite of Oregon, Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, Portland Bridal Show, and so many more, it was the number of people he touched through his involvement in Our Lady of the Lake’s lector service, as a founding member of the men’s group "Disciples of God’s Spirit", affectionately know as DOGS, and his work with Mary Sharon Moore on the Catholic Radio.
As he has done throughout his life, Terry wanted to leave a legacy that would give back. As such, a scholarship to support Catholic education at Our Lady of the Lake, a place of worship that brought him years of comfort, joy, friendship, and fulfillment, was appropriate. The Terry D. Amato Scholarship Fund offers support to those families who are financially challenged to send their children to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School.

Your Gift to The Endowment Fund
The Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School Endowment Fund provides tuition assistance for students who otherwise could not afford a Catholic school education. Families are screened through an independent service and provided the additional funding they need to meet the tuition requirements.
The Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School Endowment Fund was founded in 1983 and continues under the advisement of the Endowment Board. Your donations are invested in the Catholic Education Endowment Fund (CEEF) with the Archdiocese of Portland and are protected funds specifically intended for Catholic Schools. These monies are professionally managed and invested in a portfolio of equities and fixed income bonds that generate rates of return based on market conditions. The Endowment Board chooses the percent of allocation between equities and fixed income. The Our Lady of the Lake Fund is currently valued at $2.2 million (October 31, 2014). The school budget receives 4.5% of the average of the prior three year’s total year-end balance for the benefit of tuition assistance. Those funds are paid out of accumulated earnings, leaving the principal intact.
Your donation to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School Endowment Fund is to the principal. In essence your donation will continue to grow and will continue in perpetuity to provide tuition assistance for families for years to come. Our goal is to increase the principal of the Endowment Fund to $3 million. With your donation, the Weston Match, and the continued prudent investment of the Endowment Board we feel this goal is attainable.
Your Gift to Tuition Assistance
The current request for tuition assistance is $140,000. During the 2014-2015 school year, this amount provided 31 students with financial assistance. The 2015-2016 expected distribution of interest from Our Lady of the Lake Endowment fund is $90,000, leaving a gap of $50,000. Your gift to tuition assistance is a direct gift to the school budget to offset the $50,000 gap.
